Braces are a temporary treatment aimed at having a long-term impact on the alignment of your teeth. You’ll have to change a few habits while you have them to get the most benefit from them, and to avoid any of the problems that can potentially happen to them. Knowing the ins and outs of living with braces can make the process smoother and more effective.

Certain foods should be avoided, as they can get stuck in or even break the metal pieces of the braces. Chewy, stretchy foods like caramel and chewing gum should be avoided, as should hard candies and nuts.

It is also imperative that you keep up with your brushing habits. Always brush 2-3 times a day with a soft toothbrush, and be sure to run the toothbrush bristles along the brackets and wires to catch loose food particles. When you floss, run the floss along the brackets and clean around the wires.
